The Basseinaya Street
This street appeared in 1830s. There are a few versions about the creation of this street. The first one says that the name derives from the “bassein” (pool) of fresh drinking water that was created by the natural sources. The other version says that the name comes from the pool-fountain built in 1840s near the Bessarabian Square. The third version tells us that the name comes from the so-called “pool ditch” – water collector ditch in the middle of the street.
As a matter of fact in XIX century the water-borne waste from the Kreshchatik Street was collected there.Along the street new houses were being built according to the sketches of famous architects. Most of the houses were built in XIX-XX centuries. Manyofthemarestillthere. The side with the even numbers of the houses used to belong to the Lubedska Police Department. The side with uneven numbers of the houses used to belong to the palatial part.
In the following years the pedestrian boulevard was added to the street but unfortunately it was destroyed in 2001.
